LET THE RIGHT ONE IN

Opens January 2nd

At A Glance: This beautifully shot, atmospheric Swedish vampire movie has won more "Best Foreign Film" awards than any other picture released this year.

“Funny, fear-inducing, with periods of voyeuristic gore and an undercurrent of anxiety and dread, Let the Right One In is up there with the bloodsucking classics." - Stephen Rea, Philadelphia Inquirer

“One of the greatest vampire movies ever made; a worthy Oscar contender for International Film of the Year.” – Screen Rant

"As delicate, haunting and poetic a film as you're ever bound to see. A chilling fairy tale." – Guillermo del Toro (Pan's Labyrinth, Devil's Backbone)

Ignored at home and bullied at school, 12-year-old Oskar is drawn to the pale, serious girl who moves into the apartment next door.  Something is, well, different about Eli.  She covers her bedroom window with cardboard. She only visits him at night and won’t wear a coat in the snow. When a series of brutal murders begin to course through their Swedish village, Oskar slowly realizes just how different she is. Eli is a vampire.

Let the Right One In delivers the intense mayhem vampire fans expect, but its focus remains the sweet, pre-teen romance between two outcasts. Oskar is more worried about whether or not Eli will “go steady” with him than whether or not she’ll have him for dinner--literally. Stunningly brought to life by director Tomas Alfredson and based on the bestselling novel by John Ajvide Linqvist (who also wrote the screenplay), Let The Right One In is a richly layered tale of tortured adolescence, awkward first love, and blood.

See this tender and intelligent movie now before it becomes just another Hollywood remake (which it’s slated to do in 2009--Matt Reeves from Cloverfield to direct.)

**Tampa Theatre Staff Pick** - “When I saw Let The Right One In at the Cine-World Film Festival in Sarasota, I thought, ‘Finally!  Someone got vampires right!’  Lina Leandersson didn’t play Eli like she was some mopey, ruffle-shirted poet.  Eli was a vampire, and yet her performance retained just enough humanity for you to really care about her and her world.  Top it off with the simmering sense of dread that Johan Soderqvist’s eerie score created, and the film was a veritable feast of sight and sound and emotion.” –Janice Strand, Tampa Theatre

VICKY CRISTINA BARCELONA

At A Glance: A Woody Allen film about two girlfriends on vacation in Spain

who fall in love with the same flamboyant artist, unaware that his beautiful yet insane ex-wife is also about to re-enter the picture.

Rich, complex, funny, erotic, compassionate and thoughtful, Vicky Cristina Barcelona may be the most fully realized film Woody Allen has made in two decades.—Tom Long, Detroit News

The magnificent acting ensemble alone is worth the price of admission.—Andrew Sarris, New York Observer

Just as New York City was the backdrop for Woody Allen’s Manhattan, the stunning city of Barcelona is the setting for the romantic adventures of Vicky and Christina.  These two young Americans spend a summer in Spain and meet a flamboyant artist (Javier Bardem) and his beautiful but insane ex-wife (Penelope Cruz).  Vicky (Rebecca Hall) is straight-laced and about to be married.  Cristina (Scarlett Johansson) is a sexually adventurous free spirit.  When they all become amorously entangled, the results can only be described as chaotic in Woody Allen’s funny and open-minded celebration of love in all its configurations.

I'VE LOVED YOU SO LONG

At A Glance: The powerful story of familial struggles and redemption follows a shell-shocked Juliette who returns to live with he young sister Lea after being banished from the family for 15 years.

This beautiful and touching French feature from novelist-turned director Philippe Claudel stars Kristin Scott Thomas and Elsa Zylberstein as two sisters reunited after 15 years apart. When Juliette (Scott Thomas) comes to Léa's home and family in Alsace-Lorraine, they are virtual strangers; Juliette, we learn, has served time in prison for a terrible crime. This reality is reflected in the gruff attitude of Léa's husband (Serge Hazanavicius) and the alibis that Léa has to serve to her two adopted (and precocious) Vietnamese daughters. But the gradual revelation of secrets is not the point- or the joy- of this story, which focuses on the sisters' developing relationship. Juliette finds a job and meets new people, but most important, she has to repair her shattered sense of self and decide whether she will accept the path her sister has offered. Hers is an extraordinary journey of reconciliation, humor and hope.

These two veteran funnymen work together with bright spontaneity and the precision timing of a vaudeville team.

THE WOMEN

Be careful what you say in private.  It could become a movie.  Some gossip overheard by Clare Booth Luce in a nightclub powder room inspired her Broadway hit that’s wittily adapted for the screen featuring an array of husband snatchers, snitches and lovelorn ladies.  This catty tale of battling and bonding paints its claws Jungle Red and shreds the excesses of he pampered Park Avenue princesses.

CENTRAL AVENUE REMEMBERED

THURSDAY, JANUARY 22 at 6:30pm  $7 on sale now

Central Avenue Remembered is presented in partnership with

Tampa Theatre and WEDU

Central Avenue Remembered, a WEDU 30-minute documentary, takes its lead from Tampa Poet Laureate James Tokely’s poem of the same name, and paints a rich picture of Tampa’s past, depicting joy and pain, struggles and successes, transporting viewers to a time when the music and sounds of an era instilled an immense sense of pride.

Central Avenue was once home to more than 100 black-owned businesses and a bustling nightclub scene that attracted locals and visitors alike. With juke joints, beauty parlors, corner markets, and restaurants, it was the pulse of the community at a time when African- Americans were openly discriminated against. It was to Tampa what Harlem was to New York; a center for African-American culture in the first half of the 20th century.

Central Avenue Remembered explores a time in the city’s history that many still remember fondly. It was more than a main street; it was a destination and a viable place for black businesses. During its hey-day between 1930 and 1960, many important figures appeared on Central Avenue: Hank Ballard (co-creator of “The Twist”), Butterfly McQueen (Gone With the Wind) and Ray Charles to name a few. Even Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr., whose fiery speech in 1962 prompted bomb threats, enlightened and inspired residents of Central Avenue.

While celebrities figure prominently into Central Avenue’s past, it was the locals that were the heart of this main street, and many of the most compelling stories of this WEDU program originate with them. Viewers are introduced to descendants and relatives of this community such as Moses White who ran two popular diners known for “three hot dogs for a quarter”, but that also gave food to the needy. Clare Frye was a nurse who established a hospital for blacks in her home. Arthenia Joyner, state senator and daughter of Henry and Jean Joyner, ran the Cotton Club where entertainers such as James Brown, Ray Charles, Duke Ellington and Count Basie all appeared during the height of its popularity. The documentary also highlights Willie Robinson who was the owner of the Jackson House, a black boarding house which hosted hundreds of celebrities, sports players and visitors passing through Tampa. Ella Fitzgerald wrote her biggest hit “A-Tisket-A-Tasket,” in the front living room.

In the sixties, Central Avenue began to undergo change. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 opened up the white businesses to all races and Central Avenue shopkeepers went other places to conduct business. A police shooting in 1967 sparked such outrage that it eventually led to part of Central Avenue being burned and ultimately torn down. The local WEDU production, Central Avenue Remembered, demonstrates the warmth of the street’s descendants and takes pride in the accomplishments and enduring legacy of the relatives who helped shape the neighborhood known as Central Avenue.

AN AFTERNOON WITH ROSA RIO

"THE ELECTRIC HOUSE"

SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 15, 3:00

TICKETS ON SALE NOW

$11.50 ~ ADULT

$10.50 ~ STUDENTS WITH ID

$9.50 ~ SENIORS

For years, theatre organ legend Rosa Rio has delighted fans not only with her masterful performances at Tampa Theatre’s Mighty Wurlitzer, but with the engaging stories she tells before each concert.  Theatre-goers regularly ask for more details about her time as Orson Welles’ first organist on The Shadow, her years as Mary Martin’s personal accompanist, her run-in with Cole Porter, and more.  This year Tampa Theatre decided to indulge folks’ curiosity and let Rosa “tell it like it was” in a very special Afternoon With Rosa Rio on Sunday, February 15th.

Of course it wouldn’t be An Afternoon With Rosa Rio without seeing her accompany a classic silent film, and this year will be no different.  An Afternoon With Rosa Rio will begin with Rosa at the 1,400-pipe Mighty Wurlitzer Theatre Organ as she helps us travel back to 1922 and Buster Keaton’s short slapstick comedy, “The Electric House”.  (See full film description below.)

Then, for the first time ever at Tampa Theatre, Rosa will pop over to the grand piano to entertain us with classic tunes from the songbooks of such greats as George Gershwin and Cole Porter, interspersed with “the dish” on some of the era’s most brilliant celebrities.  Crooner Paul Wilborn, a popular cabaret entertainer and the executive director of the Palladium Theatre will join Rosa, making An Afternoon With Rosa Rio a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

About The Electric House

Buster Keaton, vintage cinema's first slapstick comedy hero, indulges in his love of machines in the riotous comedy The Electric House. Every Keaton film is scrumptiously entertaining for different reasons, and The Electric House is, thankfully, no different. Keaton plays a college student who, through a mix-up, graduates with an engineering degree. With the help of the book "Electricity Made Easy," Keaton proves a whiz and redesigns a mansion with fancy technology. As things get chaotic in the house, Keaton shines on the screen with his comedic timing and creativity involving the wonderful gadgets going crazy. Buster Keaton never fails to entertain, and neither does The Electric House.  1922/20 minutes

About Rosa Rio

At a spry 106, Rosa Rio is a testament to the will of spirit.  Her prolific career began with a simple declaration to her family at age eight, "When I grow up, I want to play a big piano, wear pretty clothes and lots of jewelry, and make people happy."  Her extraordinarily positive, motivated and determined attitude has allowed her to seamlessly adapt to changes in the entertainment industry (silents, talkies, radio, tv, and now, back to silents). Since 1996, Rosa has performed for over 30 silent film presentations for full houses at the Tampa Theatre’s 1,400-pipe Mighty Wurlitzer Theatre Organ.  Well-deserved standing ovations are the norm, but she graciously returns the accolades.  "I have such gratitude for the wonderful people who have such love for the theatre organ, silent pictures and Tampa Theatre."  For more on Rosa, visit http://www.tampatheatre.org/Rosa.php

About Paul Wilborn

Tampa native Paul Wilborn is the Executive Director of the Palladium Theater at St. Petersburg College. Paul’s American Songbook Series programs – which feature music along with commentary - have recently focused on Cole Porter, Peggy Lee, Frank Sinatra and other composers and singers from the golden age of American songwriting. He continues to perform in clubs and in concert with his trio, Blue Roses, and his large band, Paul Wilborn and the Pop Tarts.

The eldest son of America's most beloved singer/writer/philosopher Woody Guthrie was born with a guitar in one hand and a harmonica in the other and witnessed first-hand the transition from an earlier generation of ballad singers like Richard Dyer-Bennet and blues-men like Mississippi John Hurt, to a new era of singer-song writers such as Bob Dylan, Jim Croce, Joan Baez, and Phil Ochs. Arlo learned something from everyone and developed his own style, becoming a distinctive, expressive voice in a crowded community of singer-songwriters and political-social commentators. A folkie in punk's clothing, Ani DiFranco battled successfully against the Goliath of corporate rock to emerge as one of the most influential and inspirational cult heroines of the 1990s. A resolute follower of D.I.Y. ethos, DiFranco released her records through her own indie label, Righteous Babe, slowly but steadily building a devout grassroots following on the strength of a relentless tour schedule. Her prolific songbook tackles many issues with insight and compassion, the music's empowering attitude and anger tempered by the poignant candor of singer/songwriter confessionalism.

On her new album, Red Letter Year, she takes full advantage of her hardwon artistic freedom. Conceived and refined over the course of two years the album is an impeccably crafted, multi-layered sonic achievement. Love, family and home are three of the album’s most prominent muses, resulting in a dozen songs that exude warmth and renewed vigor.
